How to Protect Your Home While You’re on Holiday

Holidays are a great time to rest, relax, get away from your everyday stresses and break away from your usual routines. If you are unsure whether your security system is effective enough to protect your home, you may find you aren’t completely enjoying your time of rest. To avoid stressing over your property, it’s worth investing in new ways to enhance the security of your home. Keep reading to discover some ways that you can protect your home from potential break-ins and unwelcome intruders.

Tell your trusted neighbours that you’ll be away
It’s always a good idea to tell neighbours that you trust that you won’t be around during your time on holiday. They can keep an eye on your home for you and let you know if they see anything strange happening on your premises. Make sure that you give them a way to contact you, should there be any potential issues that arise.

Make it look like you’re at home
If you’re going to be away for a longer period, it may be worth asking the post office to hold onto your mail or maybe consider asking a friend or family member to collect your mail while you are away. If you’ve signed up to mailing or delivery subscriptions, you can pause these and then resubscribe to them when you are back. To further keep up appearances you can ask your neighbours to occasionally put out your rubbish bins to make it look like you are at home. Another thing that you could implement are timed indoor lights to make it look like you are at home during the evenings – make sure that these lights work before you leave!

Move your valuables
When being away for a longer period, it is a good idea to move your most valuable items out of sight. Be sure to place your electronics in spaces that look inconspicuous. Move all your digital gadgets, jewellery, and cash in places that are difficult to get to – just remember where you placed them for when you return.

Don’t share your vacation plans on social media
Especially today, it can be a difficult practice for some people to hide their travel plans on Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat. Sharing your travel information with the public can make critical information, such as travel dates and your specific locations at certain times, vulnerable to exploitation. If sharing your vacation plans is a must, look at only sharing this information with your close friends and make sure that your social content is set to private.

Remove your spare keys
So many of us continue to hide a spare key underneath our doormats or within a decorative rock. There have been countless reports of burglaries happening because of the owner forgetting to take away a spare key whilst they are on holiday. To avoid any chance of this happening to you, make sure that you remove all spare keys from their hiding spots.

Ensure your security system is effective, active and responsive
For peace of mind, you should make sure that your current security system is in working order. Test that your alarm system is working and communicating with your Monitoring Centre. If you don’t have a security system installed, now is the time to consider investing in one. If unsure of where to begin, you can call us on 1300 ART SEC ( 1300 278 732 ) and we’ll walk you through your options and make sure that the security system you choose is the one that is best for you. You can be confident that your premises will be safe and protected, no matter how far you away you are on your travels.
